Plant Cell Structure
Plant cells add a cell wall, chloroplasts and a large vacuole.
About this topic
Plant cells have all the main organelles of animal cells plus three extras: a rigid cellulose cell wall outside the membrane that gives support and shape, chloroplasts containing chlorophyll for photosynthesis, and a large central vacuole filled with cell sap that maintains pressure.
Turgor pressure from the vacuole keeps plants upright; wilting happens when it drops. Plant cells are often regular and box-like. Some plant cells, such as root cells, have no chloroplasts, and mature xylem cells are dead tubes.
A leaf palisade cell is a great example: it is packed with chloroplasts near the top of the leaf where light is strongest, and its large central vacuole presses the cytoplasm against the wall, helping keep the cell firm. The cellulose wall is strong but fully permeable, so water and dissolved substances pass through easily; it is the membrane just inside that controls entry.
When a plant is short of water, vacuoles lose volume, cells become flaccid and the plant wilts, which you see in a forgotten houseplant. Watering restores the pressure and the plant stands up again. A common error is saying plant cells have a cell wall instead of a membrane; they have both. Another is thinking that plants do not have mitochondria because they photosynthesise, but they respire all the time, including at night.
