Animal Cell Structure

Animal cells contain membrane-bound organelles.

About this topic

An animal cell is enclosed by a flexible cell membrane and filled with cytoplasm containing organelles. The nucleus holds DNA, mitochondria produce ATP, the ER and Golgi make and process proteins, ribosomes build proteins, lysosomes digest waste and the cytoskeleton supports shape.

Animal cells have no cell wall or chloroplasts, so they can take many shapes, from round blood cells to long nerve cells. Each organelle has a specific job, like departments in a factory, and together they keep the cell alive.

Think of an animal cell as a tiny factory. The nucleus is the office holding the blueprints, ribosomes are the assembly workers, the ER and Golgi are the packing and shipping departments, mitochondria are the power station, and the cell membrane is the security gate controlling what enters and leaves. Lysosomes act as the recycling centre, breaking down worn-out parts with enzymes.

Cells in different tissues emphasise different parts: muscle cells are packed with mitochondria because they need lots of energy, while pancreas cells have extensive rough ER because they make digestive enzymes. Students sometimes forget that animal cells have no cell wall or chloroplasts, and they usually have small vacuoles rather than one large one. Drawing and labelling a cell from memory is one of the best ways to learn the functions.
