Data Analysis in Biology
Graphs and statistics reveal patterns.
About this topic
Biologists look for patterns in data. Tables organise results; graphs present them: line graphs for continuous data, bar charts for categories, scatter graphs for relationships. Calculate means, ranges and percentages, and use error bars to show variability. Statistical tests assess whether differences are significant.
When drawing a graph, put the independent variable on the x-axis and the dependent variable on the y-axis, label axes with units, choose an even scale and draw a line of best fit through the trend, not necessarily through every point. The gradient of a graph gives a rate. Percentage change equals the change divided by the original value, times 100.
For example, if plants in light grow a mean of 12 cm and in shade 8 cm, the difference is 4 cm, a 33% decrease for shade. If error bars overlap a lot, the difference may be due to chance. A t-test or chi-squared test can then give a probability, and a result with p less than 0.05 is usually called significant.
Remember that correlation does not prove causation: ice cream sales and sunburn both rise in summer without one causing the other. Anomalous results should be identified and discussed, not simply hidden. Larger samples give more reliable conclusions.
