About this topic

The biosphere is the global sum of all ecosystems, the zone of Earth where life exists, from the deep ocean to the lower atmosphere. It is made of the lithosphere (land), hydrosphere (water) and atmosphere, and all interact through the cycles of carbon, nitrogen and water.

Life depends on energy from the Sun, liquid water, suitable temperatures and nutrients. Because spheres are connected, a change in one affects the others: a volcanic eruption adds ash to the atmosphere, cooling climate and changing growth; ocean currents carry heat that decides land climates. Humans now influence the whole biosphere.

The biosphere is divided into biomes, large regions shaped by climate, such as forests, deserts and tundra, and aquatic zones. Living things are found even in extreme places, like hydrothermal vents deep in the ocean, where bacteria use chemicals instead of light to make food (chemosynthesis). The thin layer of life is tiny compared with the planet, like the skin of an apple.

Studying the whole system helps us understand global warming and plan sustainable resource use. A common mistake is thinking the biosphere is a place separate from the other spheres; it overlaps them. Earth acts as a nearly closed system for matter but an open system for energy.
