Writing and Predicting Products
Use reaction types to predict what forms.
About this topic
Predicting products means recognising the reaction type from the reactants and applying its pattern. Two elements combine (synthesis); a single compound breaks down (decomposition); an element plus a compound suggests single replacement; two ionic compounds in water suggest double replacement; a hydrocarbon plus oxygen is combustion; an acid plus a base gives salt and water.
After deciding on the type, write correct formulas for the products using ion charges, then balance. For example, aluminium plus oxygen is synthesis: charges Al3+ and O2- give Al2O3, so 4Al + 3O2 gives 2Al2O3. A metal carbonate plus an acid gives a salt, water and carbon dioxide. A metal plus water gives a metal hydroxide and hydrogen if the metal is reactive enough, otherwise an oxide. Check solubility rules and the activity series to see if a reaction will actually occur.
Worked example: sodium hydroxide plus sulfuric acid is neutralisation, so the products are sodium sulfate and water: 2NaOH + H2SO4 gives Na2SO4 + 2H2O. Predicting products lets chemists plan syntheses, anticipate hazards such as toxic gas from mixing bleach and ammonia cleaners, and design safe experiments.
Typical errors are writing wrong formulas for products (such as NaCl2), forgetting diatomic elements, and failing to balance. Always write the formulas first, then balance with coefficients only, and confirm by observation of gas, precipitate or colour change.
