About this topic

You do not need all six measurements to prove triangles congruent. The shortcuts are SSS (three sides), SAS (two sides and the included angle), ASA (two angles and the included side), AAS (two angles and a non-included side) and HL for right triangles (hypotenuse and a leg).

AAA and SSA do not work: AAA only guarantees similar triangles, and SSA can give two different triangles. Choosing the right shortcut is the heart of most proofs.

Worked example: in triangles ABC and DEF, AB = DE, angle A = angle D, and angle B = angle E. Two angles and the included side match, so ASA proves congruence. If instead two angles and a side not between them match, use AAS. For right triangles with equal hypotenuses and one equal pair of legs, HL works. Always mark the diagram with tick marks and arcs so you can see which parts match.

These tests are the basis of proofs about bridges, kites and any shape built from triangles. The classic trap is SSA, such as sides 8 and 5 with a 30° angle opposite the 5: two different triangles can fit, so it proves nothing. AAA is equally unusable for congruence because a large and small triangle can share angles. Also check whether a shared side or vertical angles give a free equal part, which students often miss.
