About this topic

The pyramids were enormous tomb monuments built mainly in the Old Kingdom around 2600 to 2500 BCE for pharaohs. The Great Pyramid of Giza, built for Khufu, was about 146 metres tall and made of over two million stone blocks, and it remained the tallest human-made structure for nearly 4,000 years. They show how powerful the state was and how deeply religion shaped life.

Egyptians believed in an afterlife that needed a preserved body, so they developed mummification: organs were removed, the body was dried with natron salt and wrapped in linen over about seventy days. Tombs were filled with food, furniture and spells, such as the Book of the Dead, to help the dead pass the judgment of Osiris, where the heart was weighed against the feather of Ma'at, representing truth and balance. Gods such as Ra the sun, Isis and Anubis explained nature.

Builders used ramps, levers, sledges and thousands of organized workers, who lived in a nearby town with bread, beer and medical care. Later pharaohs, like Tutankhamun, were buried in hidden rock tombs in the Valley of the Kings to avoid robbers. Remember that the pyramids were tombs, not alien creations; their precise alignment came from careful astronomy and surveying.
