Sustainable Materials and Recycling
Recycling and bio-based materials cut waste.
About this topic
Sustainable materials are produced and used in ways that meet present needs without harming future generations, by saving resources, energy and ecosystems. The waste hierarchy ranks options: reduce, reuse, recycle, recover energy, and landfill last. A life-cycle assessment examines a product from raw materials through manufacture, use and disposal.
Recycling metals saves large amounts of energy: aluminium recycling uses about 5 percent of the energy needed to extract it from ore, and steel recycling about 60 percent less. Glass can be melted again indefinitely, and paper fibres can be reused several times. Plastics are harder, since different types must be separated by their resin codes, and thermoplastics such as PET and HDPE can be melted and remoulded while thermosets cannot. Chemical recycling breaks polymers back into monomers. Biodegradable plastics such as polylactic acid come from renewable plant sources but need industrial composting conditions. Renewable feedstocks, such as bio-based materials, reduce dependence on crude oil.
Example: a drinks can recycled is back on the shelf in about 60 days. Designing for disassembly, using fewer mixed materials and making longer-lasting goods all help, as does repair.
A misconception is that biodegradable always means harmless; some materials break into microplastics or need special conditions. Another is that recycling alone solves waste; reducing consumption and reusing come first.
