About this topic

A prism has two parallel, congruent bases joined by rectangular faces. Its surface area is the total area of all faces: two bases plus the lateral area, which is the base perimeter times the height. For a rectangular box, SA = 2(lw + lh + wh).

A net, the prism unfolded flat, helps visualise each face. Surface area tells you how much wrapping paper, paint or material is needed to cover a solid, and appears in heat-loss calculations.

Worked example: a box is 5 by 3 by 4. Its surface area is 2(15 + 20 + 12) = 94 square units. A triangular prism with a right triangle base of legs 3 and 4 (hypotenuse 5) and height 10 has base area 6 each, so the two bases give 12, and the lateral area is the perimeter 12 times 10, which is 120, so SA = 132.

Packaging designers minimise surface area to save material, while engineers consider it for heat loss. A frequent mistake is counting only the visible faces or forgetting both bases. Another is confusing the height of the prism with the height of the triangular base. Sketch a net and label each rectangle's dimensions; then add every piece. Units are squared. For a box, check that pairs of opposite faces are equal and that you counted six faces.
