About this topic

Religion shaped every ancient society, explaining nature, justifying rulers and guiding behaviour. Early peoples worshipped many gods (polytheism), as in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome. Hinduism, which grew in India over thousands of years with no single founder, teaches dharma (duty), karma and reincarnation, and the Vedas are its oldest scriptures.

Buddhism began with Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, around 500 BCE, who taught the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path as a way to end suffering. Judaism, among the first monotheistic faiths, centres on one God, the covenant with Abraham and Moses, and the Torah. Christianity arose from the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth in the first century CE and spread across the Roman Empire. Zoroastrianism in Persia stressed a struggle between good and evil, and Daoism and Confucianism shaped China.

Religions spread through trade, conquest and missionaries; for example, Buddhism travelled along the Silk Road. They influenced laws, art, calendars and holidays that people still observe. A good tip is to compare them by looking at beliefs, texts, practices and founders. Remember that scholars study religions as part of history without judging which is true, and that many faiths share values such as compassion and justice.
