Plants Overview
Plants are multicellular producers.
About this topic
Plants are multicellular eukaryotes that make food by photosynthesis, with cellulose cell walls. Major groups: mosses and liverworts (no vascular tissue, need moisture), ferns (vascular, reproduce with spores), conifers (cones and seeds, gymnosperms) and flowering plants (angiosperms, with flowers and fruit).
Plants have leaves for photosynthesis, stems for support and transport, and roots for anchorage and absorbing water and minerals. Vascular tissue, xylem carrying water and phloem carrying sugars, lets plants grow tall. Mosses lack it and so stay small and live in damp places. The evolution of seeds freed plants from needing water for fertilisation.
A flowering plant such as an apple tree shows how parts work together: flowers are pollinated by insects, the ovary becomes a fruit that protects seeds, and animals eating the fruit disperse them. Monocots, such as grasses, have one seed leaf and parallel leaf veins, while dicots have two seed leaves and branched veins.
Plants supply oxygen, food, timber, fibres and medicines, and they absorb carbon dioxide. Remember that plants also respire, day and night, not only photosynthesise. Also, they do not get their mass from the soil but mostly from carbon dioxide and water.
