Ming and Qing China
Ming and Qing dynasties ruled a large, wealthy China.
About this topic
The Ming dynasty (1368 to 1644) was founded by Zhu Yuanzhang after driving out the Mongols. Ming China rebuilt the Great Wall in stone and brick, constructed the Forbidden City in Beijing, and produced famous blue-and-white porcelain. Admiral Zheng He led huge treasure fleets between 1405 and 1433 to Southeast Asia, India, Arabia and East Africa, with ships far larger than Columbus's, to show Chinese power, but the government then ended the voyages and turned inward.
The Qing dynasty (1644 to 1912) was established by the Manchus from the north after a peasant rebellion toppled the Ming. Manchu rulers adopted Chinese government but required men to wear the queue hairstyle. Emperors such as Kangxi and Qianlong expanded the empire to include Tibet, Xinjiang and Mongolia, and the population soared with new American crops.
China limited European trade to the port of Canton, and trade imbalance led Britain to sell opium, resulting in the Opium Wars (1839 to 1842, 1856 to 1860) and unequal treaties that gave away Hong Kong and special rights. The Taiping Rebellion killed millions, and the dynasty was overthrown in 1911 revolution, ending 2,000 years of imperial rule. Misconception: China was not simply backward; it was a powerful economy until industrial Europe surpassed it.
