About this topic

Mental health is our emotional, psychological and social wellbeing, affecting how we think, feel and act. Like physical health, it varies, and anyone can experience problems such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders or stress. Causes may include genetics, brain chemistry, life events and environment.

The brain uses chemical messengers such as serotonin and dopamine, and imbalances can contribute to conditions like depression. Stress triggers the release of adrenaline and cortisol, which is helpful briefly but harmful when it continues for a long time. Teenagers face particular pressures from exams, social media and changing bodies.

Signs that someone needs help include persistent sadness, withdrawal from friends, changes in sleep or appetite and loss of interest. Support includes talking to a trusted adult, doctor or counsellor, talking therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy, medication in some cases, exercise, sleep and mindfulness.

Recovery is possible, and seeking help is a sign of strength. A major misconception is that mental illness is weakness or can be snapped out of; it is a health condition like diabetes. Another is that it is rare, when about one in four people will experience a problem. Reducing stigma encourages people to ask for help.
