Golgi Apparatus and Lysosomes
The Golgi packages proteins; lysosomes digest waste.
About this topic
The Golgi apparatus is a stack of flattened membrane sacs that modifies, sorts and packages proteins and lipids from the ER into vesicles for delivery inside the cell, to the membrane or for secretion. Think of it as the cell's post office.
Lysosomes are vesicles containing digestive enzymes that break down worn-out organelles, food particles and bacteria. White blood cells use them to destroy pathogens. If lysosomes malfunction, waste builds up and causes diseases such as Tay–Sachs.
Picture a post office. Proteins arrive from the ER in vesicles, the Golgi adds labels such as sugar groups, sorts them by destination and sends them off in new vesicles. Lysosomes are made at the Golgi and carry digestive enzymes that work best in acidic conditions, kept safely inside a membrane so they do not digest the cell itself.
White blood cells use lysosomes to destroy bacteria they have engulfed, and during tadpole development lysosomes help dissolve the tail. When lysosome enzymes are missing, as in Tay-Sachs disease, waste builds up and damages nerve cells. A common mix-up is thinking the Golgi makes proteins; it modifies and packages them, while ribosomes build them.
