Feudalism and Manors
Lords gave land to vassals in exchange for loyalty and service.
About this topic
Feudalism was a system of political and military organization in medieval Europe after the collapse of strong central government, from about 800 to 1300. Kings granted land (fiefs) to powerful nobles in exchange for loyalty and military service; these lords in turn gave land to knights, who swore to protect them. This chain of obligations formed a pyramid with the king at the top, then nobles, knights and peasants.
Most people were peasants or serfs bound to the land of a manor, a lord's estate with a castle or manor house, fields, a village and a church. Serfs worked the lord's land, paid part of their crops and could not leave without permission, but in return were protected. Manors were mostly self-sufficient, producing food, cloth and tools, and farming used the three-field system to rest the soil.
Example: a knight might swear an oath of homage to a baron and receive a fief, and then expect peasants on it to farm for him. Knights followed a code of chivalry, trained from boyhood as pages and squires, and fought in heavy armour. The Church was powerful and owned much land. Misconception: serfs were not slaves, though their freedom was limited. Feudalism faded as trade, towns, money and the Black Death changed society.
