Europe
Europe is compact, densely populated and highly connected.
About this topic
Europe is a relatively small, densely populated continent with a long history, fertile plains, long coastlines, and mountain ranges like the Alps. The climate is mostly temperate, moderated by the North Atlantic Drift, a warm current that gives north-west Europe much milder winters than places at the same latitude in Canada. It has about 44 countries and many languages.
Highly industrialised and urbanised, Europe was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, and its economy now relies mostly on services. Long coastlines and navigable rivers such as the Rhine and Danube helped trade, and the fertile North European Plain supports intensive farming. Many countries are in the EU, with open borders in the Schengen Area and a shared currency, the euro, used by many members.
Challenges: ageing populations, migration, energy dependence, political differences, and climate adaptation. It has been a centre of arts, science and industry for centuries. A common confusion is that Europe and the EU are the same thing; several European countries, such as Norway, Switzerland and the UK, are not members, and the border between Europe and Asia is a convention running along the Urals and other features.
