About this topic

A standard essay has three parts. The introduction opens with a hook, gives background and ends with the thesis. Body paragraphs each develop one point that supports the thesis, using topic sentences, evidence and analysis, and transitions between them. The conclusion restates the thesis in new words, summarises key points and leaves the reader with a final thought. This shape gives readers a clear map of your argument.

Planning before writing helps: outline your thesis, then list the main points in a logical order, such as strongest last or chronological. A common five-paragraph model has an introduction, three bodies and a conclusion, but longer essays simply add more body paragraphs. Hooks can be a question, a striking fact, a short anecdote or a quotation.

Worked example: an essay arguing for later school start times might open with a statistic about teenage sleep, state a thesis, then use paragraphs about health, grades and safety, address an objection about bus schedules, and end by urging schools to trial the change. Each body paragraph links back to the thesis.

Common mistakes include introducing new arguments in the conclusion, repeating the introduction word for word, leaving out counter-arguments, and writing paragraphs that do not connect. Use signposting phrases such as first, in contrast and as a result so readers can follow the logic. Leave time to check that the end answers the question you were set.
