Decolonization
Colonies in Asia and Africa gained independence after WWII.
About this topic
Decolonization was the process by which colonies in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean gained independence from European empires, mostly after World War II, between about 1945 and 1975. Causes included the weakening of Britain and France by war, growing nationalism and leaders educated in the West, ideas of self-determination in the UN Charter, and pressure from the US and USSR.
Some transitions were peaceful: India and Pakistan in 1947, Ghana in 1957 under Kwame Nkrumah, the first sub-Saharan colony to become independent, and many British colonies through negotiation. Others were violent: Algeria's war against France (1954 to 1962), Kenya's Mau Mau uprising, Vietnam's fight with France, and Portuguese colonies in Angola and Mozambique. In 1960, called the Year of Africa, seventeen countries gained independence.
New nations faced challenges: borders drawn by colonizers that split ethnic groups or forced rivals together, weak economies dependent on a single export, and Cold War meddling. Some became dictatorships or fought civil wars, as in Nigeria's Biafra conflict. Many joined the Non-Aligned Movement, rejecting both superpowers. Neocolonialism describes continued economic influence. Example: Ghana chose its name from an ancient empire. Misconception: independence did not end all problems, but it let peoples govern themselves and shaped the modern world map.
