About this topic

A compare and contrast essay examines the similarities and differences between two subjects to reach insight. Choose subjects with a meaningful connection, brainstorm points with a Venn diagram, and craft a thesis that makes a claim about why the comparison matters.

Two structures: block (discuss all of subject A, then all of subject B) and point-by-point (alternate A and B for each criterion). Point-by-point is usually better for longer essays because it keeps the comparison visible. Use signal words such as similarly, likewise, both and in the same way for likeness, and however, whereas, in contrast and on the other hand for difference.

Worked example: comparing city life and country life, you might choose criteria such as cost, transport and community. A point-by-point paragraph on transport would say that cities offer buses and trains, whereas rural areas rely on cars, and then explain what that means for independence. The thesis could argue that, despite their differences, both lifestyles offer a sense of belonging, though built in different ways.

Common mistakes include merely listing facts about each subject without linking them, treating the subjects unequally, and failing to say why the comparison is meaningful. Use the same criteria for both subjects, make sure each paragraph has a point, and end by explaining what the comparison reveals.
