ATP: The Energy Currency
ATP stores and gives energy in small packets.
About this topic
ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the cell's immediate energy source. Breaking the bond of its third phosphate group releases about 30 kJ/mol, forming ADP and phosphate, and the energy drives reactions such as muscle contraction, active transport and protein synthesis.
ATP is regenerated from ADP + Pi using energy from respiration. Cells keep only a small store, and recycle it constantly: a human uses roughly their body weight in ATP each day. Its small energy packets suit cell reactions.
Think of ATP as a rechargeable battery or pocket change. A cell cannot spend a whole glucose molecule on a small job, so respiration converts it into many ATP molecules that are used in small amounts. Muscle contraction, active transport and building proteins all run on ATP. Your body recycles its own weight in ATP each day, constantly turning ADP back into ATP.
Because the cell stores only a little ATP, it must make it continuously, which is why you cannot hold your breath for long. Some poisons, like cyanide, block ATP production and are deadly quickly. A common misconception is that ATP is stored energy for the long term; fats and glycogen do that. ATP is for immediate use.
