About this topic

Agriculture uses about half of habitable land. Types: subsistence (food for the family) and commercial (for sale), arable (crops), pastoral (animals) and mixed, intensive (high inputs on small land) and extensive (low inputs on large land). Green Revolution advances (high-yield seeds, fertilisers, irrigation) raised output, helping countries such as India avoid famine in the 1960s and 70s, though they also brought costs like water use, pollution and debt for small farmers.

Food security means access to enough safe, nutritious food at all times. It depends on four things: availability, access, use and stability. Many people go hungry not because too little food exists globally, but because of poverty, conflict and poor distribution. Systems vary: a rice farmer in Vietnam may use intensive methods on small paddies, while a cattle ranch in Australia is extensive.

Threats: drought, soil erosion, conflict, poverty, climate change and food waste (about one-third is wasted). Sustainable approaches include crop rotation, agroforestry, organic farming, water-efficient irrigation and reducing meat consumption, since producing meat needs far more land and water than plants. A frequent misconception is that famine is simply caused by drought; it is usually the result of several factors, including politics and markets.
